A voyage of discovery into the story of the Beatons of Pennycross – members of one of Scotland’s most significant medical families. The book explores the historical setting, the Beatons’ herbal treatments (many of which are still used) and the almost unbelievable survival of Gaelic manuscripts from their library. The site of their physic garden can still be seen today.

Shearwater: A Bird, an Ocean and a Long Way Home

Roger Grenville-Morgan walked from one end of Britain to the other exploring reasons to be hopeful within the current climate crisis. Part travelogue, part ecological reflection, Across a Waking Land is a rich and complex book which challenges many of our assumptions about what is happening in the world and our response to it.

Shearwater is the story of the astonishing life cycle of the eponymous bird – a story which begins and ends in this telling on the island of Mull.

Gareth and his family moved to Canna from London and set up a gourmet restaurant on an island with a population of 18! With no shop and erratic supplies, many of the ingredients which feature on the menu at Café Canna are sourced locally from land and sea.
This book is both a wonderful collection of seasonal recipes and the inspiring story of building a business at the heart of a small community in the face of what might seem insuperable odds.

Picking up the pieces of his life, Dr Neil Anderson finds his way to Mull from Edinburgh, where two wolf cubs and local vet Katie change his life.

Sandy’s love of the west shines through in this novel, written in his customary beautiful prose. Over the years he has been a regular guest at our book festival, so we are especially excited that he is here to talk about his first adult novel largely set on the island. Sandy will of course bring updates from all our favourites including the new novel in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, The Great Hippopotamus Hotel.
